Best Bet Sizes for Ice Fishing — What 100 Sessions Taught Me

Why Bet Size Matters More Than Strategy
The Bankroll-to-Bet Ratio
Everyone bangs on about which segments to bet on. Almost nobody talks about how much to bet. And honestly? Bet sizing has had way more impact on my results than any strategy I've tried. If your total bet per spin is more than 5% of your bankroll, you're one cold streak from being done. That's not opinion. That's maths.
How Bet Size Affects Session Length
£2 per spin on a £50 bankroll? 25 losing spins and you're bust. £0.50 per spin? You've got 100. Simple division but most people ignore it. Session length determines bonus triggers, and bonuses are where the real payouts live. You need to survive long enough to actually see them. For our full main strategy guide, see the strategy page.
My 100-Session Experiment
Setup — Three Bankroll Levels
100 sessions total. 33 at micro (£25), 34 at standard (£100), 33 at premium (£500). Same strategy for each (Balanced Spread), bet sizes scaled proportionally. Every single session tracked: spins played, bonuses triggered, ending balance, bust or not. The data told a very clear story.

| Average session length | 28 minutes |

| Bust rate | 6 of 33 (18%) |

£500 Bankroll Results (Premium) — 33 Sessions
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Bet per spin | £10 total |
| Average session length | 55 minutes |
| Average spins per session | 72 |
| Bonuses triggered (total) | 84 |
| Sessions ending in profit | 15 of 33 (45%) |
| Best session ending balance | £1,240 |
| Worst session ending balance | £185 |
| Bust rate | 0 of 33 (0%) |
| Average ending balance | £462 |

The micro bankroll busted 18% of the time. Nearly 1 in 5 sessions ended at £0. The standard and premium? Never busted. Not once. The conclusion's obvious: your bet size relative to bankroll determines whether you even get to play long enough for bonuses to hit.
Profit rate hovered around 36–45% regardless of bankroll size — the house edge doesn't care about your bankroll. But bigger bankrolls meant more spins, more bonus triggers, more chances to recover from cold streaks. That's the actual value of proper bet sizing. For the full odds data, see our maths page.
Optimal Bet Sizing by Bankroll
| Bankroll | Recommended Bet/Spin | Max % of Bankroll | Expected Session | My Recommended Spread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under £50 | £0.50–£1.00 | 2% | 25–40 min | £0.20 on 1, £0.10 on 2, £0.10 on 5, £0.10 on Big Oranges |
| £50–£200 | £2.00–£4.00 | 2–3% | 40–60 min | £0.50 on 1, £0.50 on 2, £0.50 on 5, £1.00 on Big Oranges |
| £200+ | £5.00–£10.00 | 2% | 50–75 min | £1 on 1, £1 on 2, £1 on 5, £1 on 10, £1 on each bonus |
Under £50 — Micro Bankroll Guide
Survival mode. Keep bets tiny. Focus on frequent-hitting numbers. One bonus segment max. Every penny counts — a bad run of 15 spins can end your session if bets are too big. It's not glamorous but it keeps you in the game.
£50–£200 — Standard Bankroll Guide
The sweet spot for most players. Room to cover numbers AND a bonus without risking a bust. This is where the Balanced Spread properly shines. Enough cushion to weather cold streaks while keeping that bonus anticipation going.
£200+ — Premium Bankroll Guide
Now you can afford to spread wider. Bonus Hunter becomes viable — you can absorb 30+ losing spins without breaking a sweat. High Roller approach opens up for the occasional brave session. For the full bonus round payouts, see our bonus page.

Conservative Play Bet Sizes
1–2% of bankroll per spin. At £100 that's £1–£2 total across your chosen segments. Low risk. Long sessions. Minimal excitement. Good for background play.
Bonus Hunter Bet Sizes
2–3% of bankroll (higher because you need the bonus to hit before you go bust). At £100 that's £2–£3 across bonus segments. High risk, high potential. Not for the faint-hearted.
Balanced Approach Bet Sizes
2–2.5% of bankroll. The Goldilocks zone. Enough on numbers to sustain you, enough on bonuses to keep things interesting. This is what I use 80% of the time and I genuinely think it's the best approach for most people.

The Mistakes I Made Early On
My first month I was betting 10% of my bankroll per spin. £10 per spin on a £100 bankroll. That's 10 losing spins before you're done. Less than 7 minutes of play. I busted four times in my first week before I figured out what was wrong. Four times! In one week!
Second mistake: increasing bets after a win. Hit a 50x on a £2 bet? Great, let's try £5! That's how I turned a £100 profit into a £40 loss in one particularly frustrating session. The endorphin rush from a big win makes you think the good luck continues. It doesn't. The wheel doesn't know you just won.
The lesson? Fixed bet sizes. Same amount. Every spin. No exceptions. Boring? Absolutely. Works? Also absolutely. My results improved dramatically once I stopped letting my emotions set my bet sizes.
My Current Betting Setup
After 100 sessions: £100 bankroll, £2.50 total per spin, Balanced Spread (£0.50 on 1, £0.50 on 2, £0.50 on 5, £1 on Big Oranges). 45–60 minutes per session. 3–4 times a week.
Consistent entertainment without stressful swings. Most exciting approach? No. But I've been doing it for three months and I'm still in profit — barely, mind, but still. More importantly I enjoy every session because I know my bankroll can handle a cold streak. That peace of mind is worth more than any single big win. And that's not something I would've said in month one.
